Description
6 Danube Street in Edinburgh is an impressive townhouse designed by James Milne in 1824. This extensive crescented terrace features two-storey and basement, three-bay townhouses in a plain classical style, with a prominent six-bay centre. The facade is made of sandstone ashlar, with a channelled ground floor and a banded base course. The first floor boasts continuous cast-iron balconies and a balustraded parapet, with curved anthemion balconies on the advanced centre bays. The entrance platts extend over the basement area recess, and the inset doorways have timber doors with rectangular fanlights that feature a twin circle glazing pattern. The windows at the first floor are moulded, architraved, and corniced.
The rear elevation is constructed from coursed rubble with tooled ashlar rybats, lintels, and cills, and features regular fenestration. The windows predominantly have a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case, with a 6-over-9-pane arrangement at the first floor. The roof is double-pitched and covered with grey slates, featuring corniced ashlar ridge stacks with clay cans and cast-iron rainwater goods. The basement area recess to the street is edged with cast-iron railings that include integrated lamp standards with large bowl shades.
Inside, the townhouse showcases a classical decorative scheme with intricate plasterwork and spacious drawing rooms. The large entrance vestibules are adorned with cornicing, and the stone stairs are complemented by a well-detailed cast iron balustrade and timber handrail, topped by large cupolas featuring decorative plasterwork. The principal rooms also exhibit decorative plasterwork, and there are working window shutters. Some areas have been converted into flats over time.
