Description

38 Danube Street is a prominent two-storey, basement and attic, four-bay corner tenement built in 1824 by James Milne. It features a plain classical style with giant order anta pilasters and a pilastered ashlar attic storey, constructed from sandstone ashlar. The entrance has platts that oversail the basement area recess to the street. The building has a banded base course, a moulded cornice at the first floor with a plain entablature, and corniced eaves with a narrow blocking course above. The doorways are inset, featuring boarded four-panel timber doors and rectangular fanlights. The first-floor windows have inset cast-iron balustrades, and there are two blind bays to the right on the northeast (Danube Street) elevation.

The southeast (rear) elevation is made of coursed squared rubble with tooled ashlar rybats, lintels, and cills. The windows predominantly have a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case, with a four-over-12-pane glazing at the first floor. The roof is double-pitched and covered with grey slates. There is a corniced rendered wallhead stack on the northeast (Danube Street) elevation, along with corniced ashlar wallhead stacks and some clay cans. The basement area recess to the street is edged with cast-iron railings that incorporate decorative lamp standards with large bowl shades.

Inside, as seen in 2010, the decorative classical scheme is characterized by intricate plasterwork, large drawing rooms, and stone stairs with well-detailed balustrades topped by large cupolas. Some areas have been converted into flats.
