Description

3-5 Church Hill in Morningside, Edinburgh, is a double villa built around 1843 by John Henderson. This two-storey building features a cream sandstone facade with stugged ashlar at the front and squared, snecked rubble on the rear and sides. It has a band course above the ground floor, a cill band course at the first floor, a band eaves course, and ashlar mullions.

The south (front) elevation has five bays. Number 3 has three bays, with an advanced bay to the right that features a pedimented gable and a two-storey canted window topped with a half-pitched stone slate roof, along with a blank tablet in the gablehead. The central bay has a plain doorway with a rectangular plate glass fanlight, and a single window above on the first floor. To the left, there is a bay with a projecting corniced tripartite window at ground level and a single window above on the first floor. Number 5 has two bays, with a plain doorway featuring a panelled door and a rectangular plate glass fanlight in the left bay, and a single window above. The right bay has single windows on both the ground and first floors. There are single-storey garages on both the outer right and outer left.

The north (rear) elevation also has five bays, with two advanced bays to the right that contain single windows and a wallhead stack. The central bay features French doors at ground level and a single window above. To the left is a recessed gabled bay with an apex stack and single-storey additions with piend roofs in the re-entrant angle, along with two single windows on the first floor. The west elevation has three bays, with a gabled bay to the right that has an apex stack. The centre bay contains two single windows, while the left bay has a secondary door and a single window. The east elevation features a gabled bay to the left with an apex stack and single-storey additions at ground level.

The building has timber sash and case windows, mostly with plate glass glazing, although some rear windows are 4-pane. The slate roof has lead flashing and features two apex stacks, one wallhead stack, and one central stack. There is a moulded eaves gutter and gutter heads.

The interior was not seen in 1992. Surrounding the property is a tall rubble wall with semi-circular coping at the front, rear, and sides, along with four square coped gatepiers, although the one for number 3 has been shortened.
