Description
The Rothesay Hotel, located at 7, 8 and 9 Rothesay Place in Edinburgh, was designed by the architectural firm Peddie, Kinnear and Peddie between 1878 and 1879, with later alterations made by Leadbetter Fairley and Reid in 1927. This building is a terrace of three-storey and basement Italianate townhouses, featuring a unified façade that includes main-door and common stair flats behind. The basement area has some vaulted cellars and retaining walls, and is constructed of sandstone ashlar with droved ashlar at the basement level.
The entrance platts oversail the basements, and there is a banded base course along the façade. The eaves course is consoled and corniced. The doorways have moulded architraved doorpieces with rectangular fanlights above. The ground floor features slightly advanced tripartite windows, with a moulded cill course at the ground, first, and second floors, and bracketed windows at the ground floor. The first floor has corniced tripartite windows that are round arched and supported by Corinthian columns, flanked by pilasters and an entablature. The second floor has architraved surrounds.
There are stone balconies at the first floor, supported by deep stone brackets and adorned with cast-iron railings. The windows are primarily plate glass set in timber sash and case frames, with some plate glass over two-pane timber casement windows. The roof is a double pitch M-section design, featuring a corniced ashlar ridge and gable end stacks with modern clay cans. Additionally, there are cast-iron railings on the ashlar coping that edges the basement recess to the street, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
