Description
2 Rothesay Place in Edinburgh is a terrace of three-storey and basement townhouses, built by James Watherston between 1878 and 1879, designed by the architectural firm Peddie and Kinnear. The façade features a finely detailed design with a basement area that includes some vaulted cellars and retaining walls. The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with droved ashlar used at the basement level.
The entrance platts extend over the basements, and there is a banded base course along the bottom. The eaves course is bracketed and corniced. The doorways are framed with architraved pieces and rectangular fanlights above. There is a moulded, bracketed cill course at the ground, first, and second floors. The first-floor windows are tri-partite, round-arched, and flanked by Corinthian column mullions, with pilasters on the sides and an entablature above. The second-floor windows have architraved surrounds.
At the first floor, stone balconies are supported by deep stone brackets and feature cast-iron railings. The windows are made of plate glass in timber sash and case frames. The roof is a double pitch M-section design, with a corniced ashlar ridge and gable end stacks that have modern clay cans. The property also includes cast-iron railings on the ashlar coping that edges the basement recess to the street, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
