Description
Ardtaraig House is a 17th century U-plan house that underwent significant remodeling in 1922, with a large extension added to the west in 1935. The building is a two-storey asymmetrical Scots revival mansion featuring steeply pitched roofs, crowstepped gables, gablehead and swept dormers that break the eaves at the first floor, and corbelled bartizans. The exterior is finished in harled masonry with regular fenestration.
On the north elevation, the entrance features a long stepped range with four advanced gables. The asymmetrical entrance gable from 1922 has a roll-moulded doorway and a turret that is corbelled out at the first floor in the re-entrant angle to the right. To the left, there is a large projecting gabled range with a wallhead stack and a bartizan. The outer left side has a long range with gableheaded dormers and a low crowstep gabled projection, while the outer right has a four-bay range with a slightly advanced crowstep gable and a bartizan at the corner.
The south elevation, facing the garden, also has a long stepped range with three projecting wings. The original 17th century two-storey and attic house forms the principal wing at the center, featuring swept dormers and a forestair to the south elevation, along with a semi-octagonal stair tower that is advanced from the east elevation. To the right is a low range that likely incorporates the 17th century service wing.
The windows are timber sash and case with small pane glazing, and the roof is covered with graded grey slate. The gablehead and ridge have corniced stacks with short red clay cans.
Inside, the house has a well-preserved early 20th century interior scheme, featuring unpainted timber-boarded internal doors, stone chimney pieces, and a distinctive corridor on the first floor with a semi-hexagonal ceiling.
