Description

91 and 93 Millknowe Road in Campbeltown is a symmetrical terrace of artisan's houses built in 1878 by Robert Weir & Son. The terrace consists of 29 bays arranged in a pattern of 4-8-5-8-4, with two stories and an attic. The central section has five bays, flanked by two-story ranges on either side. The walls are roughcast with droved ashlar dressings, and there are raised margins around the openings with projecting cills. A cill course is present at the first floor level.

On the east elevation facing Millknowe Road, the central five-bay group features an entrance door in the middle, with a blank space above it on the first floor. Gabled dormers break the eaves at the center and outer bays, topped with cylindrical finials at the apexes and skewputts. The center dormer has a bipartite window. The eight-bay sections on either side have entrance doors located at the 6th, 11th, 19th, and 24th bays, with the doors at the 11th and 19th bays closely flanked by windows. Segmentally-arched pends are found in the 9th and 21st bays. The outermost sections on the left and right each have an entrance door at ground level situated between the inner bays.

The west elevation at the rear is regularly fenestrated, featuring windows of various heights and widths, along with stair windows at intermediate levels. Gabled dormers also break the eaves at the center. Both the front and rear have 8-pane timber sash and case windows, while the entrance doors are vertically boarded timber with rectangular plate glass fanlights above, except for a modern door at the 24th bay. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are rendered and coped apex stacks located to the east of the ridges, with circular cans. Ashlar skews have been removed at the north gable. The property includes cast-iron downpipes and gutters that are profiled at the principal front.

The boundary walls consist of a random rubble wall along the street and at the ends of the rear courtyard. There is also a random rubble retaining wall at the back of the courtyard, along with a pair of concrete steps with brick bases and steel handrails leading up to the drying greens above.
