Description

74 King Street West in Helensburgh is a terrace of three single-storey and attic villas built around 1875. The villas feature decorative ironwork and are constructed from cream rubble that is squared and snecked, with ashlar dressings on the south elevation. They have corniced, canted, and tripartite windows with ashlar mullions, stop-chamfered arrises, moulded lintels, and bracketted eaves.

The south elevation, facing King Street, has the central villa (no. 74) with a doorway at the centre that includes a deep-set panelled door and a decorative timber lattice-work porch, topped with a plate glass fanlight. On either side, there are full-height canted windows, and above them, canted slate-hung dormer windows that just break the eaves. These dormers have decorative bracketted iron window guards and piended slate roofs. There is a smaller gabled dormer between the two larger ones, featuring a round-arched window and decorative bargeboard detail at the apex.

To the right (east) is no. 72, which is similar to the central villa but has a tripartite window to the left of the doorway and a bipartite slate-hung gabled dormer above with window guards. To the left (west), no. 76 mirrors the design of no. 72, but has a square-headed window inserted into a small dormer.

On the north (rear) elevation, there is a central stair window that breaks the eaves, featuring a cat-slide roof and fixed-pane glazing with coloured margin panels. Gabled dormers that break the eaves flank this central window.

The villas mostly have 4-pane and plate glass sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are ashlar corniced stacks, with two rendered stacks at the centre, still retaining their original cans. Sections of moulded guttering serve as a cornice.
