Description

The building comprises Lussa Power Station, part of the Lussa Hydro Electric Scheme, designed by Ian G Lindsay and constructed in 1956. It is a tall, single-story structure with breaking wallhead dormers, forming a roughly rectangular 7-bay plan. The building is Scottish Renaissance in style and features a balustraded and coped rubble terrace to the southeast. The exterior is painted render with tabbed sandstone ashlar roll-moulded surrounds and quoins, with prominent stone cills. A base course and moulded corniced eaves course are present. Lancet arched sandstone ashlar heads define dormer windows in a pseudo-attic storey, which break the wallhead on the southeast and northwest elevations. Raised stone skews and shaped skewputts are also present.

The northeast elevation is a gable end with a single broad bay and a slightly recessed lean-to section to the right. It features a tripartite window centered on the elevation, a carved decorative sandstone ashlar panel above, and a small decorative arrowslit window at the gable apex. A narrower window is located to the right.

The southeast elevation has 7 bays, with 5 large multi-paned windows incorporating louvered ventilators at the bottom. Lower doorways are situated in the outer bays, and a decorative sandstone panel is above the door on the far north side. Large windows are on the ground floor across the 5-bay center, also with louvered vents at their base. Five corresponding breaking eaves dormers are positioned at the pseudo-attic level.

The southwest elevation is a gable end featuring a broad single bay and a slightly recessed lean-to section to the left. A large round-arched vehicular access door with a metal roller shutter is present, along with a window directly above within a continuous sandstone surround, which includes a decorative panel bearing the Coat of Arms of the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board. A small window is to the left (northwest).

The northwest elevation is arranged with 7 bays, a lean-to section at ground floor level, and a smaller window on the far right (southeast). Louvered vents are incorporated into the five breaking eaves dormers.

The windows predominantly feature small-pane metal glazing with top and bottom hopper openings in painted metal frames. The roof is pitched and covered in grey slates. Sandstone ashlar skew blocks are visible, with some shouldered skewputts. Cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers are also present.

The interior is predominantly plain, with a large open-plan turbine hall. Offices and ancillary rooms are located to the northwest of the plan. A gantry crane is positioned at the rear, supported by large concrete piers and steel rails. The roof is open, revealing metal rafters and purlins, and a timber deck.

Balustraded and coped coursed random rubble boundary walls define the terrace. A further boundary wall of coursed random rubble, with large rubble piers, designates the power station compound.
