Description
Kiels is a range of early to mid 19th century farm buildings that includes both domestic and agricultural structures. The byre, located at the southwest of the group, dates from the mid 19th century and features two compartments, with the western compartment likely being a later addition. Both compartments are built of rubble with coarse lime mortar joints and roughly dressed quoins. There is a central entrance on the north elevation and four windows on the south elevation, one of which has been reduced in size. The building has a pitched roof that was formerly thatched but is now covered with corrugated iron.
To the west of the byre is a former cottage and byre, probably from the early 19th century. This structure has drystone walls with roughly projecting base courses and very roughly dressed quoins. It consists of three unequal bays, with an entrance in the eastern section and one window in each of the remaining bays on the south elevation. The roof features elementary trusses and was originally thatched.
To the northwest of the former cottage and byre is a garage that was once a byre, also from the early 19th century. This building has drystone walls with very roughly dressed quoins and consists of two bays, each with an entrance on the south elevation. There is a large cart entrance now blocked in the east gable end and a small ventilation hole in the west gable. The roof has simple trusses and was originally thatched.
