Description

The Kelvin Hotel, located at 1-3 Cawdor Place on Shore Street in Oban, is an early 19th century, two-storey traditional terrace consisting of 21 bays, made up of seven three-bay houses. The narrower plan at No 4 creates a recess in the rear elevation, suggesting it was added later to connect two earlier blocks. The street-facing elevation is finished in stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, while the rear and side elevations are made of coursed rubble with droved dressings. All elevations are painted.

The building features regular fenestration with projecting window sills. The entrance doors for Nos 1, 2, 5, and 6 are located in bay 3 of the elevation, while Nos 3 and 7 have their entrances in bay 1. Central entrance doors are present on the elevations of Nos 4 and 5, with No 5 showcasing a Greek Doric doorpiece featuring partially fluted columns with plain capitals and a block pediment above. Small bracketed timber canopies are positioned over the doorways of Nos 2, 3, and 7.

The front and rear of Nos 1-3 and the rear elevations of Nos 4-6 have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The north elevation of Nos 4-6 features plate glass timber sash and case windows, while No 7 has modern glazing. The piend-roofed dormers are slate-hung, with tripartite dormers at No 1, bipartite at No 2, canted at No 5, and single dormers elsewhere, mostly with 4-pane timber sash and case windows, except for No 2 which has 12-pane timber sash and case windows at the front and rear.

The roof is covered in grey slate with lead-covered skews on the west sides of Nos 2 and 5, and skew copes at the end gables. Multiple-flue stacks are present, except for the one located between Nos 6 and 7.
