Description

38-44 John Street in Helensburgh is a two-storey and attic tenement built in 1873. It features a symmetrical design with eight bays, consisting of two semi-detached four-bay blocks. The exterior is rendered and lined to resemble ashlar stone. Notable architectural details include raised margins, pediments with finials above the first-floor windows, and ashlar mullioned windows.

On the west elevation facing John Street, the block to the right, numbered 32-36, has a central pend with doorways on either side, although the doorway on the left has been blocked and converted into a window. There are bipartite windows flanking the pend, with additional windows off-centre to the right and left on the first floor, as well as bipartite windows in the outer bays. The left block, numbered 38-44, mirrors this design, with doorways flanking a blocked pend and a window on the right at ground level where the mullion has been removed.

The north side elevation is gabled with an apex stack, while the south side elevation is also gabled, featuring a window in the centre on the first floor and an apex stack. The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, including some four-pane and plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are corniced rendered stacks with moulded cans that have a fret pattern at the base. Each block has a wallhead stack with a moulded base, and the stack on the right has the date inscribed at its base. Additionally, there are two gabled slate-hung dormers located between the wallhead stacks and at the outer right and left, with a fleuron motif on the gableheads, although this motif is missing from the dormer on the off-centre left.
