Description
The Machrihanish Ladies Golf Clubhouse, attributed to H.E. Clifford and built around 1893 to 1896, features a slightly lower piend-roof addition at the rear from around 1940. This single-storey, three-bay clubhouse is situated on raised ground opposite the first tee of the Machrihanish golf course in Kintyre. The north (entrance) elevation has a timber veranda supported by decorative turned timber posts and features bracketed eaves. A central pediment crowns a quadripartite canted window, with a recessed entrance at the left corner. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and has a shallow piended roof with a raised ridge and end finials.
The front windows are timber framed with 12-pane glazing in the upper section, while the side and rear windows are also timber. The roof is covered with grey graded slates, and there are cast iron downpipes.
Inside, the clubhouse has 70 timber lockers that were relocated from the men's clubhouse in 1965. The interior features a fitted timber fire surround, timber panelling up to dado height, panelled doors, and beaded door surrounds throughout. A wide segmental archway leads to the rear extension, and the vestibule has terracotta and black floor tiles.
