Description

Keppoch House is a three-storey house with a raised basement, constructed around 1815. It is rectangular in plan and built in a Classical style using stucco. The main, southwest elevation is symmetrical with three bays, and a slightly projecting central bay topped with a pediment. A columned porch, featuring paired columns, is situated centrally and partly enclosed by cast-iron railings. A bowed entrance screen with etched glass was added in the later 19th century. The first and second floors of the central bay feature tripartite windows. Flanking bays have windows set in arched recesses on the ground floor. The basement is slightly advanced, built of stugged stone (now painted) with segmental-arched, barred windows.

The northwest elevation is symmetrical, featuring a main block of two bays to the right, with a lower two-bay block to the left. A later canted window bridges the basement on the left, supported by a battered base, and a gabled dormer is positioned centrally. The southeast elevation has a symmetrical block of two bays to the left and a lower two-bay block to the right, with a canted window bridging the basement on ashlar support. The northeast (rear) elevation is dominated by a slightly projecting three-bay, near-symmetrical block, featuring a round-headed stair window at first-floor level, flanked by twelve-pane sash and case windows. An attic window sits below the eaves on the left, with further windows to the outer left and right. Recessed bays are punctuated by a gabled dormer breaking the eaves.

The house has twelve-pane timber sash and case windows throughout. The roof is grey slate, with piend sections and lead flashings; the rear block has both piend and platform roof sections. Broad corniced ridge stacks are present. The interior was not inspected in 1995.

The walled gardens, dating from the early 19th century with some additions from the early 20th, are D-shaped to the southeast of the house. The main entrance is in the northwest wall and has a droved margin and a 1816 datestone. The wall is higher in the northwest corner, with a large lean-to greenhouse against the south-facing wall. An early 19th-century sundial is also present, along with some alterations from the early 20th century. The earlier 19th-century walled vegetable garden lies to the north of the main garden, again with alterations from the early 20th century. It includes a rubble wall with slab coping and buttresses, a rubble gateway with stepped wallhead and exposed voussoirs inscribed with "pax int antiuos," a cast-iron gate, and some ruinous lean-to and free-standing greenhouses. A similar pedestrian gate is also present.

The gates, gate piers, and quadrant walls are constructed of ashlar panels with corniced gate piers and block caps. Low quadrant walls with slab coping are flanked by terminal piers.
