Description

This is a mid to later 19th-century villa with associated gatepiers, railings, and a boundary wall, situated within Cardross Park.

The villa is a three-storey, five-bay rectangular building constructed of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone with ashlar margins and dressings. The north elevation uses random rubble, harl-pointed with ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, string course, and advanced eaves with exposed rafters. The first-floor windows are unusually tall.

The east (main) elevation is symmetrical, with five bays. A Doric columned porch is centrally placed, topped with an entablature, dentilled cornice, and balustrade. The porch's original doorway is now blocked by a modern plywood door, though a ten-panelled, two-leaf door remains behind it. Symmetrical bays flank the porch, with the first-floor windows being larger with stone transoms. To the outer bays are large, two-storey, five-light canted windows with balustraded parapets. Tripartite windows are located at the upper floor. The south elevation is also symmetrical, featuring a two-storey, canted and balustraded window at the centre, with a tripartite window above. Flanking bays are symmetrical, with a window immediately to the left of the canted window at ground level. This window is a later bipartite, transomed, and mullioned design. The north elevation is asymmetrical, with a three-bay central block and piend-roofed blocks to the outer bays. A boarded door and a small-pane letterbox fanlight are located at the penultimate bay on the right. Windows are disposed asymmetrically at ground level but symmetrically at the upper floors; one ground-floor window is blinded. A single-storey, brick, piend-roofed outhouse sits at the outer right corner. The west elevation has been altered and is near-symmetrically disposed, featuring a single-storey gabled section, a modern rendered stack, and a tall stair window with an ashlar transom to the upper pane. A brick single-storey addition is situated to the outer left. All windows are now blocked, except for the stair window. The roof is a modern pantiled piended form, with no visible stacks.

The interior includes an oak stair with a decorative newel post, a decorative tiled mosaic floor, a compartmentalised ceiling, and heavy, decorative plasterwork. A queenpost glazed roof with decorative grilles covers the landing. Fireplaces are of plain marble, with shallow carved wooden chimneypieces featuring an open pediment. Further decorative plasterwork is present, alongside a bas-relief nautical frieze.

A rectangular-plan walled garden is constructed of rubble stone with slab coping and features blocked openings. The gatepiers are sandstone with sunken panels and depressed pyramidal caps. Low rubble walls with slab coping run alongside decorative cast-iron railings that attach to slender square cast-iron piers with ball finials.
