Description

46-50 John Street in Helensburgh is a two-storey and attic tenement built in 1877. It features a symmetrical design with eight bays, consisting of two semi-detached four-bay blocks. The exterior is rendered and lined to resemble ashlar stone. Notable architectural details include ashlar mullioned windows, buckle motifs on the window architraves, bracketed cills, and applied finialled pediments above the first-floor windows, as well as buckle quoins.

The west elevation facing John Street has the block for Nos 46-50 on the right, with a central basket-arched pend and flanking doorways that have panelled fanlit doors. There are bipartite windows on either side, with the first-floor windows positioned off-centre. The outer bays also feature bipartite windows. The left four-bay block, Nos 52-56, mirrors this design but has a doorway on the left that is now blocked and converted into a window.

The north and south side elevations are gabled and include apex stacks. There is a variety of glazing patterns, including some four-pane and plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are corniced rendered stacks with moulded cans that have a fret pattern at the base and cornice. Each block has a wallhead stack with a moulded base at the center. Additionally, there are two gabled slate-hung dormers located between the wallhead stacks and at the outer right and left, with fleuron detail on the gableheads, although this detail is missing from the dormer on the outer left.
