Description

The Strathclyde Regional Council Registry Office, located at 25 and 27 King Street West in Helensburgh, was designed by Robert Wemyss in 1890. This two-storey building features an asymmetrical design, constructed from stugged, snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings. It has a base course and a partially bracketed cill course at the first floor, along with ashlar mullioned windows that have ovolo moulded arrises and low eaves.

On the northern entrance elevation, there is a semi-circular-arched doorway positioned off-centre to the left, featuring deep-chamfered reveals and modern two-leaf panelled doors, with a wheelchair ramp adjacent. Above the doorway, the inscription 'Rhu Parish Council Chambers' is visible. To the right of the entrance, there is a bipartite window, and a semi-circular-arched pend is located to the outer right. A window can be found at the first floor to the right, with a short pilaster strip to the left that is corbelled at the cill course and has a date stone below it. Another bipartite window is positioned to the outer right. The outer left features a gabled bay with a pair of windows at the ground level and a canted oriel above, topped with a half-piend slate roof. A carved panel is present at the gablehead.

The building has sash and case windows, with plate glass in the lower sashes and multi-pane designs in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with green/grey slate and features a coped sandstone stack on the left gable, along with skew blocks and original rainwater goods.
