Description
Redcliffe is a 2-storey, asymmetrical L-plan villa designed by Robert Wemyss and dated 1899. The building features pink and cream sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and red tile-hanging on the upper storey. Architectural details include a base course, a string course between the ground and first floor, finialled and bargeboarded gables, and overhanging bracketed eaves.
The south elevation, which is the entrance side, has an ashlar porch set diagonally in the re-entrant angle at the center. It includes a basket-arched doorway with chamfered reveals, a moulded arch, a boarded door, and strip pilasters on either side. Above the doorway is a decorative panel featuring a masque and the date, with a finial breaking the roof-moulded cornice. To the left at ground level is a window, with a bipartite window further left and a bow window at the left angle. On the first floor, there is a tripartite window with a taller light in the center that breaks the eaves, and a 5-light window to the left also breaking the eaves. An advanced wing to the right features a gabled canted oriel that breaks the eaves on the west elevation, alongside a bow window clasping the right angle. At the first floor, there is a 5-light window with a taller round-arched light in the center.
The west side elevation has a bow window at the right angle and a small window to the left at ground level. A small shallow bowed oriel is located to the right at the first floor. There is a conservatory abutting the west elevation.
The north rear elevation has a taller gable bay advanced to the outer left, featuring a bipartite window at ground level and three closely grouped round-arched windows at the first floor. A modern flat-roofed block is attached to the left, while a recessed wing to the right has a broad single-storey block projecting to the center with a half-piended roof and a tall wallhead stack in the center.
The first floor has unsympathetic uPVC replacement windows, while other windows are sash and case with plate glass in the lower sashes and multi-pane above. The roof is covered with grey/green slate and red ridge tiles, with harled coped stacks.
The interior has not been seen. The conservatory is an L-plan, rectangular block with a canted south elevation, connected by a short glazed corridor to the west elevation of the villa. It has harled base walls and a timber framework with vertical panes above.
The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of low red and cream sandstone rubble walls. Square plan ashlar piers are set on plinths with corniced and moulded caps.
