Description

The Piermaster's House, located on the South Pier in Oban, dates back to around 1814. This single-storey, three-bay cottage has a rectangular plan and features circular towers at the northern corners, each with a pointed-arch window that gives the building a Gothick influence. There is an early 20th-century addition to the west and south. The walls are made of whitewashed rubble, with some rendered brick in the later addition.

On the east (principal) elevation, the original three-bay cottage has a central door and is symmetrical, except for the tower at the outer right corner and the later addition that projects on the left. The north elevation features a central wallhead stack flanked by the corner towers, with a rectangular recess in the center that has an inscription. There is a wrought-iron lamp bracket on the cill of the northeast tower and an iron loop on the stack, with the later addition visible to the right.

The west (rear) elevation shows a symmetrical two-bay addition, with the northwest tower of the original cottage visible to the left. The south elevation also has a symmetrical two-bay addition, with the end of the original cottage partially visible to the right, featuring a central wallhead stack.

The cottage and addition have four-pane sash and case windows on the south and east elevations, as well as in the towers. The left bay of the west elevation has a six-pane upper sash and a two-pane lower sash. The roofs are piended for the cottage and addition, while the towers have conical roofs with short cylindrical finials, all covered in grey slate with diminishing courses. There are cast-iron downpipes and gutters that curve at the towers, along with single flue stacks that have modern copes and cans.
