Description
Benmore View, located on Shore Road in Sandbank, was built in 1902. This single-storey and attic building has a rectangular plan and is designed in the Arts and Crafts style. Originally a reading room with a caretaker's flat above, it has since been converted into two flats. The exterior features a wet dash finish painted white, accented with some cream sandstone dressings. The slate roof has a wide overhang, supported by timber ogee brackets at the corners.
On the southwest elevation facing Shore Road, there is a segmental-headed doorway with two-leaf panelled storm doors and a half-glazed vestibule door flanked by part-curved and glazed side panels. To the right of the doorway is a large canted transom and mullion window with small pane glazing and top hoppers. There are four small windows to the left of the doorway and three large flat-roofed dormers above.
The northwest side elevation features a gabled section with an entrance to the upper flat. There is one window at ground level to the left and two windows above. The northeast elevation, facing Holy Loch, has a central doorway with a panelled door and a curved cornice beneath which is the date. Canted windows flank the doorway, matching the design on the southwest elevation, along with three large flat-roofed dormers.
On the southeast side elevation, there are two windows at ground level and one window on the first floor. The original timber windows on the ground flat include transom and mullion canted windows as well as sash and case windows, mostly featuring a small pane glazing pattern and original glass. The upper flat has mostly modern replacement windows, although the northeast dormers retain their original windows. The roof is grey slate with stone skews, corniced chimneys topped with clay pots, and ogee cast-iron gutters.
The interior of the upper flat was seen in October 1995 and retains some original features, including the stair, doors, and landing storage units. The lower flat has not been inspected.
