Description
Iona Abbey is a significant building located on Iona, showcasing a blend of Transitional and Gothic architectural styles. The structure is primarily built from rubble and features slated roofs.
The Cathedral Church of St. Mary is cruciform in shape. The nave dates back to the early 13th century and was widened around 1500. The north transept is from the later 12th century, while the south transept and the tower over the crossing were rebuilt around 1500. The chancel, which includes a sacristy and south aisle, also dates to around 1500. Notable architectural features include corbelled parapets, buttresses, a base course, and traceried windows. The pointed west doorway, dating to around 1500, adds to the building's character. Inside, there are timber ceilings, a cusped doorway leading to the sacristy, and two pointed arches on the north side of the chancel. Additional interior elements include a piscina, sedilia, and effigies of Abbots Mackinnon and Mackenzie, as well as the 8th Duke of Argyll.
The conventual buildings, which date back to the early 13th century, include a cloister with pointed arches, a chapter house featuring a barrel vault, two round arches, and traceried windows, along with a refectory, the Abbot's House, an infirmary (now known as Michael Chapel), and an old refectory that now serves as a museum.
St. Columba's Cell, which may have Celtic origins, has remains located on Tor Abb.
