Description

Arbirlot Primary School is a schoolhouse built in 1876, featuring a two-storey structure that was originally near-rectangular but now includes an extension on the northeast side. It showcases distinctive Scots Baronial architectural details. The building is constructed from slaistered, squared snecked, stugged red sandstone rubble, with smooth ashlar margins. The corners are rounded and corbelled out at the southeast and northwest corners, and the first-floor windows on the southwest and southeast elevations have shaped lintels.

On the southwest elevation, there is a two-bay layout. The ground floor has a window on the left and French doors in an altered opening on the right. The first floor features catslide dormers that break the eaves, with tripartite windows supported by colonnettes acting as mullions.

The southeast elevation presents a four-bay design. The left side has a two-bay gable end, while the right side includes a bow-ended bay and a recessed bay at the outer right. The outer left bay is advanced and gabled, featuring a canted window on the ground floor, with corbelled-out details on the mullions between the ground and first floors, as well as flanking the first-floor window. At the inner left bay, steps lead to a timber-boarded and glazed door set in a pedimented doorpiece that includes a date panel reading '1876'. There is also a window on the first floor. The inner right bay is bowed to the right, topped with a semi-conical roof and a stone finial, and has a small ground floor window alongside a larger first-floor window. A modern extension is located at the outer right recessed bay.

The northeast elevation features a two-bay modern extension with an oculus window in the centre of the first floor. The northwest elevation has an advanced single bay gable end of the modern extension on the left, with a two-bay elevation to the right flank, and a single bay gable end of the original building to the right.

The glazing includes original timber sash and case windows on the ground floor, while the first floor and both storeys of the extension have modern timber windows with varying glazing patterns and opening mechanisms. The roof is pitched and covered with graded slate, featuring bracketed overhanging eaves on the southwest elevation and shaped stone skews. The gable head stacks are panelled and corniced, with circular cans, and there are some cast iron rainwater goods.
