Description

The Garden Buildings at the Walled Garden of Old Montrose date from the late 18th century. Located to the north of the house, the large square brick-walled garden features a semi-circular walled garden to the east, with the north wall partially demolished. In the northwest corner of the larger garden, there is a small cluster of buildings that includes Grieve's House, a single-storey brick building with a rectangular plan and a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly used as gasworks. There is also a 4-bay, 2-storey stable block with a central cart entrance that has a fine joggle-jointed lintel and a window with a re-used roll-moulded lintel. At the centre of both gardens are mono-pitch potting sheds. In the southwest corner of the larger garden, there is a square-plan, single-storey brick garden building (known as a bothy) with an octagonal stone stack at the apex of a pyramidal pavilion roof, although the roof is largely collapsed. The southeast corner features a similar 2-storey building known as the apple house.

The Gardener's Cottage, dating from the later 18th century, is situated to the southwest of the house. It has a rectangular plan and consists of a single storey with a basement, along with a small single-storey addition to the south. The front elevation has three bays with a central timber-boarded door. The cottage is constructed of brick, partly limewashed, with stone quoins and margins. It features a pyramidal pavilion roof with a central octagonal stone and brick stack at the apex, and mostly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows.
