Hall, Abbey Parish Church, West Abbey Street, Arbroath

Abbey Parish Church, located on West Abbey Street in Arbroath, was designed by James MacLaren of Dundee between 1876 and 1878. The church incorporates and remodels a building from 1797, with a tower added to the north end of the new west front. The church is built in the Gothic style using red sandstone with polished dressings. The original structure has a rectangular plan and a gabled roof, with altered openings. There is a full-width addition to the west long wall facing West Abbey Street, which is shallow in plan and features a steep piended roof. The front has large traceried windows set within a shallow, advanced buttressed and pinnacled central gable. The square tower has chamfered angles, pointed openings, and a slated facetted and lucarned squat spire topped with a finial.

There is an iron-railed low boundary wall along West Abbey Street, complemented by gabletted gatepiers.

The church also includes two halls. The hall on East Abbey Street is a late Georgian single-storey structure with a piended roof and a symmetrical nine-bay front elevation, finished in painted ashlar with a slated roof. The hall to the south of the church is likely designed by MacLaren and features a gable with three stepped hood-moulded lights facing West Abbey Street.
