Description
Lonmay Parish Church is a T-plan church constructed in 1787. It is built of squared granite, with cherry-cocking and a slate roof with skewputs. A segment-headed bellcote, shaped like a birdcage and topped with a ball finial, rises from the roof. The glazing has been altered.
The interior is of considerable interest. Galleries are located on the north-west and east sides, each supported by two wooden columns extending to the ceiling. Three arches are incorporated into the cove of the ceiling on the west and east sides. The original pulpit remains, featuring a fine ogee sounding board with a balustraded arcade in front. There are no monuments within the churchyard, with the exception of the Cairness enclosure.
The church is an ecclesiastical building currently in use as such. A manse was built in 1824, but it has undergone significant alterations and is considered to have no particular architectural interest. Heritors’ Records are incomplete, but John Smith was consulted in September 1835, potentially regarding this church or the new church of Kinimmonth.
