Description
Terpersie Castle is a former castle that was originally dated to 1561. It was burned in 1665 and restored, but it became deserted in 1885 and is now in a ruinous state. The castle features a Z-plan layout, which is among the earliest or second earliest known examples of this design.
The structure is three stories high and built from rubble, with dormer heads. The ground floor is unvaulted and measures 28 feet by 18 feet. It includes circular towers that are 17 feet in diameter and polygonal internally, with corbelled stair turrets at the angles. The southeast angle features a corbel with the letter 'G' for Gordon.
A later southeast wing, which was illustrated in Giles and C. & D. Arch., has been completely demolished. A loophole with a boar's head top and a datestone from 1561 is now located at Knockospock House. The moat surrounding the castle has been completely drained.
