Description

Carron Tea Rooms, located at 20 Cameron Street in Stonehaven, was designed by Colonel Tawse and Messrs Hall in 1936 and underwent renovation by Hall and Tawse from 1999 to 2000. This tall single-storey building with a basement features a three-bay, piend-roofed Art Deco restaurant. It has a distinctive bowed loggia or verandah supported by concrete pillars, and a bowed front with large windows that showcase Art Deco glazing, combining vertical and horizontal patterns along with Deco symbols. The structure is built from banded brick and reinforced concrete and is set on a terrace above a period garden.

The south elevation is symmetrical, featuring a double staircase leading to the loggia, which is adorned with Art Deco metalwork balustrade railing. The central bay is set back and includes a large bow with a narrow five-part full-height window topped with decoratively-astragalled top-lights. The outer bays have similarly detailed four-part windows, with the outer lights functioning as doors.

The west elevation has a tall piended bay at the center, which contains a tall raised-center five-light window. To the right is a flat-roofed loggia with later infill glazing, and to the left is a lower piended bay with symmetrical glazing.

The north elevation, facing Evan Street, is listed separately as 26 to 34 Evan Street. The south elevation features metal-framed windows with decoratively-astragalled glazing patterns that combine vertical and horizontal designs with Deco symbols, while other areas largely consist of multi-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the Carron Tea Rooms boasts a fine Art Deco interior, highlighted by a main apartment with a vaulted ceiling and horizontal panelled walls that incorporate some decorative metalwork panels. The counter includes a clock integrated behind it, and the east end wall features an Art Deco engraved 'Picasso glass' mirror supported by tall curved mirrored supports, possibly with lights. Original light fittings are present throughout. The toilets retain original decorative floor and wall tiles and fittings, and the wood floors have been reclaimed from the Aberdeen College of Commerce. A top-lit link corridor leads to the north entrance on Evan Street.

The terraced garden includes boundary walls, gatepiers, and gates, featuring rubble and brick terracing that leads to an ornamental garden. The garden walls facing the street are complemented by period gate- and end-piers, an ironwork archway that incorporates the name 'CARRON RESTAURANT', and boldly detailed wrought-iron gates.
