Description

The former Consolidated Pneumatic Tool Works site on Kessock Road and Maconochie Road in Fraserburgh features an engineering building complex designed by Louis Christian Mullgardt between 1903 and 1906. This complex includes a two-storey, nine-bay rectangular office block, a two-gabled rectangular harled former machine workshop at the rear, and a slightly later single-storey, four-bay rectangular former workshop to the right of the office block. The buildings are situated on a prominent corner within a larger industrial works complex.

Constructed from squared, coursed, and tooled Pitsligo granite with Rora granite ashlar dressings, the complex features a base course and a band course on the left range. The ground floor has segmental-arched, keystoned, and mullioned tripartite windows, while the upper section has shouldered gabled dormers that break the eaves. A distinctive sawtoothed roof made of glazed and timber boarding crowns the former machine shop.

The principal elevation of the office block and former workshop showcases nine and four bays, respectively. The entrance gable is advanced and features two bays with buttressed corners and a central pier. It includes paired entrances with segmental-arched and keystoned fanlights, along with deep-set later entrance doors. The later workshop has a band course and a linear glazed clerestory. The north elevation displays a three-bay gable with tripartite windows at the ground floor and a pair of flat-arched windows at the first floor, complete with a relieving arch above.

The machine shop's northeast elevation features two gables to the left of the office block, a timber eaves course, and a clerestory formed by the sawtooth roof, along with a later flat-arched entrance opening to the left. The windows throughout are predominantly plate glass set in timber sash and case frames. The roofs are pitched and covered with grey slates, with some rooflights on the right side of the nine-bay range, and straight ashlar skews. The building is equipped with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior, as seen in 2011, has undergone remodelling and subdivision in the later 20th and early 21st centuries, while the former machine shop remains open-plan, featuring original steel columns and roof trusses.

Surrounding the site are low granite boundary walls topped with chamfered copes and cast iron railings. Square-plan gatepiers with rockfaced bases and pyramidal capping stand at the entrance, which is marked by two-leaf cast-iron gates opening to the south.
