Description

59 High Street in Stonehaven is a small council housing development built between 1938 and 1942. It features asymmetrical, two-storey terraces designed in the Scottish 17th century style, characterized by a stepped roofline, crowsteps, stone-pedimented and catslide dormer heads that break the eaves, roll-moulded doorways (some of which are deep-set), and round-arched pend entrances. The building is situated on a triangular site with courtyard gardens at the rear. The exterior is constructed of coursed and squared dressed rubble with ashlar dressings and raised cills, and the angles are rounded and corbelled to square at the first floor.

The southeast elevation, facing Albert Lane, has three doors, two of which have tiny windows above that abut the eaves, and one door is in a bowed bay at the outer right. There is a slightly projecting crowstepped gable in the bay to the right of the center, along with two pedimented and one catslide dormer. A large rooflight that is out of character is present in the bay to the left of the center. The bay to the outer left is 19 King Street.

The north elevation, which faces High Street, features four doors, one with a tiny window above, and two in slightly advanced outer crowstepped gables. There is a central pend entrance and four catslide dormers. The early 17th century, category 'B' listed building at 51 High Street abuts at the outer right. The doors to Nos 53 and 59 are panelled timber.

On the southwest elevation, facing King Street, there are four doors, with the outer left door having a tiny window above. Crowstepped gables are present in the bays to the left of center and to the outer right, along with two pedimented and two catslide dormers, and a central pend entrance. The doors to Nos 11 and 19 are also panelled timber.

The east elevation, facing The Cross, has two doors, with the left door featuring a tiny window above. There are three pedimented dormer heads and a central pend entrance, with a panelled timber door to Nos 4 and 5. The bay to the outer right is 59 High Street.

The courtyard elevations have seen little alteration, retaining some vertically-boarded timber doors with three-pane glazed top lights and letterbox fanlights, as well as some small cast-iron rooflights. However, there is an out-of-character box dormer at No 2 Albert Lane.

The building features largely modern uPVC and hardwood glazing, grey slate roofing, ashlar stacks with cans, and ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts. The interiors are plain and largely modern, though not all were seen in 2006.
