St Erchan's Well, Kincardine O'Neil

St Erchan's Well is an ornamental well head dating to 1858, prominently situated in the centre of the village of Kincardine O'Neil. Constructed in four courses of squared sandstone ashlar, the well head features a shallow domed corniced capital and a decorative iron finial. A metal lion head spout is located on the west side, and a large, hinged metal access door is situated on the north side. The well head was supplied with piped water from a spring approximately 400 yards northeast of the village and was originally built to provide water for horses. The well’s name relates to the first church in the village, which was dedicated to St Erchard (or Erchan) and built near the spring source. It represents a good example of a 19th century decorative well head, notable for its dressed stone construction and decorative ironwork.
