Description
Learney House is a large house, originally of an L-plan layout, dating from around 1747. It has undergone significant alterations over the centuries. The house was largely reconstructed in 1838 by John Smith, following a fire. This work included a new porch on the north side and a complete rebuilding of the south wall. Attics were added to the east wing at this time. The southwest corner was rebuilt in 1847, likely by J & W Smith. A northwest wing was raised from a single storey to two storeys in 1868, creating an approximately symmetrical U-shaped courtyard. An addition in 1868 was designed by Ewen, who was an assistant to J R Mackenzie. The west wing contains 18th-century panelling, and the dining room retains its original decoration from 1840. The property includes terraced gardens.
