Description
Dessmuir is a late 19th-century cottage-style house with a 20th-century addition to the northeast. The house is two storeys and has an attic, and is three bays wide, with a gabled form. It is constructed of roughly coursed, lightly tooled grey granite with finely finished margins, and features timber bargeboards with queen post details.
The south elevation, which serves as the main entrance front, is nearly symmetrical. A panelled and glazed timber door with a 12-pane fanlight occupies the centre bay on the ground floor, flanked by windows on either side. A steeply gabled window sits above the centre of the first floor, flanked to the right by a six-pane window and to the left by a glazed boarded timber door leading to a balcony. A window is located on the ground floor of the right bay, with the roof sweeping through the first floor to form a canopy supported by rusticated timber columns. A window on the ground floor of the left bay is accompanied by a rustic timber balcony between the ground and first floors, and a gabled window above.
The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, showing two bays, with a gabled bay to the left and a recessed bay to the right, largely obscured by the 20th-century addition. A tripartite window is present on the ground floor of the left bay, with a first-floor window above. The ground floor of the right return is obscured by the addition, with a gableted window to the first floor. The 20th-century addition features a two-leaf glazed door on the ground floor, flanked to the right by a two-light window and to the left by two two-light windows. A window is set into the gable of the first floor, with a three-light window to the right return and a pair of skylights above.
The northeast elevation is also asymmetrical, again with two bays. A boarded timber door with ten ventilation holes is located to the right of the ground floor, flanked to the left by two infilled openings, and a window. A narrow window is centred in the gable of the first floor, and the 20th-century addition projects to the outer left.
The northwest elevation is asymmetrical, with five bays. A canted window occupies the ground floor of the centre bay, flanked on the right by a window and on the left by a boarded timber door with a canopy, flanked by another window and the outer left window. A blank bay sits to the outer right. First-floor windows break the eaves of the centre bay and are flanked by windows on either side, with a two-light dormer window within the outer right bay.
On the southwest elevation, a symmetrical single bay displays a four-light canted window with a battered base on the ground floor, and a two-light window on the centre of the first floor.
Most windows are small-pane upper sashes with plate glass lower sashes, and others are two-pane sash and case windows. The roofs are covered in grey slate with decorative terracotta ridges, complemented by coped granite wall head stacks and a harled ridge stack with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
A high granite rubble boundary wall with rubble coping runs along the northeast edge, while a lower rubble wall with irregular rubble coping defines the remainder of the boundary. Square-plan granite gatepiers with low pyramidal caps mark the entrance.
To the north of the house stands a horizontally boarded timber former carriage house, displaying segmental-arched openings, a gableted window in the centre flanked by two-leaf boarded timber doors, and a boarded timber door to the outer left. It has a piended grey slate roof with decorative terracotta ridges and cast-iron rainwater goods.
