Description
Hatton Castle is a castellated mansion house built in its current form in 1814. It has a square plan with round angle towers, one-third of which is part of the old Castle of Balquholly. The entrance front is three stories high with five windows, while the other frontages have four windows. The entrance features a Langley type gothic doorpiece with shafted columns and a battlemented parapet, and the towers are slightly taller with corbelled parapets. There is a low central crenellated tower. The exterior is made of red rubble and is thinly harled.
The interior, which mainly dates from 1814, includes a simple classical style with a grand central staircase and apse-ended dining and drawing rooms. The entrance hall has been altered recently by Turnbull of Turriff, and there were other alterations made to the upper floors by W Duncan of Turriff in 1901.
