Description
The Chapel at Drum Castle dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with earlier origins suggested. It is a small, rectangular building constructed from rubble, featuring crowstepped gables and grotesque heads at the eastern end. The chapel was re-roofed in 1857, during which the west window was enlarged and a cross was added.
Masonry repairs were made in 1864, along with alterations to the altar and credence. A font was installed in 1882, and a brass figure of the Blessed Virgin, believed to have originated from Augsburg in Germany, was added in 1897. In 1951, a segmentally arched tomb recess for Sir Alexander Irvine, who passed away in 1911 and was originally located at Drum's Aisle in St Nicholas, Aberdeen, was re-erected in the chapel.
