Description
The War Memorial Buildings on Ballater Road in Aboyne were constructed in the late 19th century and underwent alterations in 1921. This two-storey structure features three bays, with an additional two-bay wing to the northeast. The building is made of tooled, coursed pink granite, accented with grey dressings and finely finished margins. Architectural details include a base course, chamfered reveals, stepped band courses, an eaves cornice, and long and short quoins.
The southeast, or principal elevation, is near-symmetrical and showcases a round-arched chamfered loggia across the three bays of the ground floor. Each arch features a tooled shield at the keystone and tympanum, with a tooled grey granite plaque above that reads "WAR MEMORIAL BUILDINGS." The first floor has a gableted tripartite window that breaks the eaves, topped with a carved stone finial at the apex. To the outer left is the adjoining two-bay wing, which includes a bipartite window on the left and a gabled bay on the right, featuring windows on both the ground and first floors.
The northeast elevation is asymmetrical, with a two-storey, part-gabled bay on the left that has a modern panelled timber door on the ground floor and a window on the first floor. To the right are lean-to single-storey bays with irregularly placed openings.
The northwest elevation was not visible in 1998. The southwest elevation is also asymmetrical and consists of seven bays. It includes two lean-to additions on the ground floor, with the outer left bay advanced and featuring a large infilled opening flanked by a small window. There is a tripartite window to the right of the ground floor, flanked on the outer right by a canted window that has a plaque below reading "THIS STONE WAS LAID BY MARGARET LOTHIAN BARONESS GLENTANAR, 7TH MAY 1921," along with decorative traceried windows that contain stained glass. A bipartite window is located on the first floor of the gabled bay on the outer right.
The building predominantly features two-pane and four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a lead ridge, with stone skews coped to the southeast elevation. The wallhead and gablehead stack are coped and have circular cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, there is a large hall with a decorative open timber roof and a gallery facing the stage. The interior retains some original doors, mouldings, and light fittings, along with a timber staircase that has decorative timber balusters.
The boundary wall consists of granite rubble and flanks the principal elevation on both sides, topped with rough-faced coping.
