Description

The former station located at Station Square in Aboyne was built in 1896 and is a single-storey, rectangular building with 15 bays. It is constructed from tooled coursed granite, featuring finely finished margins. The design includes a base course, rounded projecting cills on the north elevation, and segmental-arched openings on the south elevation. The eaves course has stone label stops that were originally part of a cast-iron canopy, which still survive on the south side.

On the north elevation, which serves as the entrance, the layout is near-symmetrical. The central four bays are slightly advanced and stepped up, featuring a modern glazed timber door with vertical panels on either side. To the right, there is a tripartite window, while the left side has two tripartite windows, all topped by a slate canopy supported by decorative cast-iron brackets. The flanking bays on both sides have irregularly placed door and window openings. The gable is symmetrically placed and features a blind oeil-de-beouf opening in the gablehead on both sides. There are round angle turrets rising from a square base at the outer left and right bays, adorned with a decorative eaves cornice, fishscale roof, and weathervane. An inscribed plaque is located on the outer right.

The west elevation is asymmetrical with a single bay that has a window in an infilled doorway at the center, topped by a blank shield, and an angle turret on the outer left.

The south elevation is near-symmetrical but has irregularly placed door and window openings. The canopy that was once present is no longer in place.

The east elevation was not seen during the 1998 inspection.

The building predominantly features timber windows with decorative geometric astragals on the upper panels. It has a piended grey slate roof with a pierced terracotta ridge, corniced granite wallhead, and ridge stacks with circular cans. The building also includes cast-iron hoppers, plastic gutters, and aluminium downpipes.
