Description
Knock House, located at 10 Knock Street in Whitehills, dates back to 1825. This two-storey, three-bay house features single-storey, single-bay wings that are slightly set back from the south front and project at the rear, creating a shallow U-shaped courtyard. The building is constructed of rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings. The south (garden) front has a centrally located entrance with a cornice and a date stone above, leading to a renewed panelled door. Large windows flank the entrance, while smaller windows are situated on the first floor.
At the rear, the entrances are mirrored on the inner faces of the projecting wings, with regular first-floor fenestration. Some ground floor windows have been resized. The main house features 12-paned glazing, while the adjacent 10A has 16-pane windows, and the east wing windows have modern glazing. The house has coped end stacks and a slate roof with modern roof lights, while the wings have piended slate roofs.
Inside, there is a central stairwell with a plain balustrade, simple ceiling cornices, beaded panelled doors, and window shutters. The parlour (east) has deep moulded skirting boards, an overmantel, and a simple panelled chimneypiece with angle roundels, likely a painted slate chimneypiece, along with an embossed cast-iron grate.
The garden extends to the south of the house and is enclosed by high rubble walls, featuring a central pedestrian gateway that is closed by a spearhead cast-iron gate.
