Description
5 Polmuir Road, including the boundary walls, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, basement and attic terrace of eight mirrored two-bay houses. The building is constructed from white-grey granite ashlar and features a base course, panelled timber doors with fretted timber lintels and letterbox fanlights, an eaves course, and three-light canted piend-roofed dormers on the attic floor.
The west elevation is symmetrical, consisting of two mirrored pairs of four bays. It has regularly spaced windows on the basement floor, with stone steps leading to doorways in the two central bays at ground level, flanked by single windows on the outer left and right. The first floor has regular fenestration, and the dormers are located on the outer left and right of the attic floor, with irregularly placed skylights.
The south elevation is rough-faced and features a decorative gable. It is symmetrical with two windows on both the ground and first floors.
The east elevation is asymmetrical. For Nos 1 and 3, it is harled and finely finished at the margins, with round-arched stair windows (now a doorway to No 3) in the centre two bays, flanked by regular fenestration. There is a dormer to the right on the attic floor and a modern rectangular dormer to the left. Nos 4 and 7 have a modern gabled addition advanced to the centre, with regular fenestration on both sides and two dormers on the attic floor, along with irregular skylights.
The north elevation features coursed granite rubble, finely finished at the margins, and has a decorative gable. It is near-symmetrical with a modern doorway to the left on the ground floor, a window above, and a window on the ground and first floors of the flanking bay to the right.
The windows throughout are predominantly four-pane and twelve-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has a lead ridge, while No 7 has a replacement purple-grey slate roof. The gablehead and ridge stacks are coped granite with predominantly octagonal cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interiors were not seen in 1999. The boundary walls consist of coped granite walls to the west and north, with brick-coped rubble walls for the remainder.
