Description

This building, located at 403 and 405 Great Western Road in Aberdeen, is a two-storey and attic villa with three bays, built in the late 19th century, likely by architect Arthur Clyne. It features baronial detailing, with rough-faced granite ashlar on the northwest elevation and coursed rubble on the rest, accented by finely finished margins. The base course is a contrasting dark grey, with a cill course at the ground floor.

The northwest elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a round-arched roll-moulded doorway at the center bay on the ground floor. This doorway is deeply recessed and features a pilastered panelled timber door flanked by glazed panels and a fanlight, with a window above on the first floor. To the right, there is a small trefoil-headed window on the ground floor, and an angle turret that is corbelled out at the first floor, with a window at the center and a lead finial atop a fishscale tiled roof. To the left, a broad gabled bay contains a pair of windows on the ground floor, separated by an oversized column that supports a three-light canted oriel on the first floor. The gablehead features a Venetian window and a crowstepped gable with a gableted stone finial.

The southwest elevation is gabled and asymmetrical, with a doorway on the left side of the ground floor, a tall bipartite stair window near the center, and a pair of small windows flanking to the right at ground level. There is a single window on the first floor to the right, with a blind pink granite tablet to the left and a small window set in the gablehead.

The southeast elevation was not visible in 2000, while the northeast elevation is gabled and has a wing adjoining to the outer left. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a lead ridge and modern rooflight, with coped stone skews and corniced gablehead stacks that have circular cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.

Boundary walls consist of low coped tooled ashlar walls on the southwest and west sides, which step up to form coped rubble walls on the remaining sides.
