Description
4 Carden Terrace is a house built around 1868 by James Henderson, with later additions. It is a single storey, basement, and attic structure with three bays. The exterior is made of tooled coursed granite ashlar, finely finished at the edges, while the basement is rough-faced. Features include a base course, an eaves blocking course, and long and short quoins.
The northwest elevation is symmetrical, with a central doorway on the principal floor that has a cornice with consoles. A flight of stone steps leads up to a panelled timber door, which is topped with a timber fretwork lintel and a letterbox fanlight. The flanking bays on either side have canted windows in the basement and ground floors. The attic features a modern skylight, flanked by piend-roofed canted dormers.
The southwest and northeast elevations are gabled, with single storey additions attached to the south. The southeast elevation was not visible in 2000.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 2-pane and 4-pane configurations. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a lead ridge. The gable ends have coped stone skews with blocked skewputts, and there are coped granite gablehead stacks with octagonal cans. The property has cast-iron rainwater goods.
The boundary walls include a low wall enclosing the basement, with a coped granite wall to the north and coped rubble walls to the east and west.
