Description

Probably Archibald Simpson, 1837. Single storey, attic and basement, 12-bay, rectangular-plan terrace, comprising 6 2-bay cottages. Coursed granite rubble with finely finished raised margins. Base course; windows and doorways corniced with consoles; panelled timber doors with letterbox fanlights; strip quoins; eaves course; canted piend-roofed dormers.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: near-symmetrical; 6 2-bay cottages; doorway to bay to left of ground floor, reached by stone steps oversailing basement; window to flanking bay to right at ground floor, variety of windows to basement below; dormer to right of attic floor, flanked to left by 2-pane or modern skylight.

W ELEVATION: gabled; symmetrical; 2-bay; blind windows to basement and ground floors.

S ELEVATION: regularly placed doorways and windows, dormers and skylights to attic floor.

E ELEVATION: gabled.

Predominantly 12-pane and 8-pane lying-pane timber sash and case windows, 2-pane to Nos 4 and 6, 4-pane to No 5. Graded grey slate roof with lead ridge. Coped stone skews. Coped granite gablehead and ridge stacks with circular and octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: not seen 1999.

GATES, GATEPIERS, BOUNDARY WALLS, LETTER BOX AND RAILINGS: square-plan granite gatepiers with pyramidal caps to N, 2-leaf decorative iron gate; low granite walls flanking to left and right, stepped-up and adjoining terrace, surmounted by iron railings. Brick coped rubble garden walls to S incorporating brick outbuildings. Victorian wall letter box Type "C" set in wall to SW.
