Description
Benholm's Lodge is a 17th-century tower house originally built in 1610/1616 in Netherkirkgate, just outside the city wall, by Sir Robert Keith of Benholm. The name "Wallace" is a corruption of "Well-house." The building was re-erected and restored at its current location by the City Architect's Department, with advice from Dr. Simpson, at the expense of Marks and Spencer in 1964. It is a three-storey, Z-plan structure made of rubble, measuring 34 feet by 20 feet 6 inches. The eastern side features an 11-foot corbelled element, a sculptured figure in a recess, and an armorial panel. The building was originally harled.
