Description

8 Hamilton Place in Aberdeen is a pair of semi-detached villas built in the later 19th century, designed in a cottage orne style. They are single storey with an attic and consist of four bays, featuring tooled Aberdeen bond grey granite with contrasting light grey dressings. The building has a base course, chamfered cills on the ground floor, and projecting cills on the first floor. The Tudor-arched openings have radial voussoirs, and the eaves are overhanging with pierced zig-zag bargeboards. The attic floor includes 2-light Y-traceried windows.

The southeast elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a mirrored pair of two-bay houses. The central doorways have keystone details and panelled timber doors, with No 10 having a glazed door. Timber dentil mouldings adorn the lintels, and there is a fanlight above the doors, with small windows flanking the inner bays. Gabled timber dormers are present in the attic, and the outer left and right bays are advanced with canted windows on the ground floor. Decorative iron brattishing is found on the roof of the left canted window, and there is a window in the centre of the gablehead above, topped with a timber finial at the apex.

The northeast elevation features a gable with a single window centered in it, showcasing a timber kingpost detail. The northwest elevation was not visible in 2000, while the southwest elevation also has a gable with a single window centered in it.

The villas predominantly have 2-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a lead ridge, and coped granite gablehead and ridge stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The boundary walls consist of low coped granite walls to the southeast and rubble walls to the southwest and northeast.
