Description
St Oliver Plunkett's Church is a mid-20th century Roman Catholic church located on Roxborough Road at Cullyhanna, County Down. The building is recorded but does not meet the legislative test for listing as it represents a relatively recent construction with no earlier ecclesiastical buildings on the site.
The church was completed in 1956, following foundations commenced on 12 July 1954. It was constructed in traditional form by parishioners themselves without an architect, built by the Murphys and Galbraiths from Newtownhamilton and plastered by McNulty of Cullyhanna. The site was provided free by local farmer Felix Makin, whose son carried out much of the joinery work and directed voluntary labour. Parishioners funded the construction, each contributing an average of £30. The church was built to serve infirm parishioners in the south-east of the parish who had difficulty accessing the existing church at Cullyhanna. It was opened and dedicated to Blessed Oliver Plunkett on 11 November 1956 by Cardinal D'Alton, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.
The building has a rectangular footprint with a narrow gable facing southwest towards the road. The front elevation features central arched and timber-sheeted entrance doors framed within a narrow, raised and elongated arched surround. Above this is an elevated alcove containing a figure of St Oliver Plunkett. Either side of the entrance are elongated arched plain stained-glass windows. Raised plastered quoins define the outer edges of the façade, culminating in projecting raised verges to the gable and terminating a natural slate roof. The walls are smooth rendered with masonry paint finish, with raised quoins and plinths defined in contrasting colour.
The rear elevation has raised concrete verges with a central flat roof projection defining the Sanctuary. A small pitched extension to the right side houses the sacristy and ancillary accommodation, with raised painted plaster quoins defining the outer corners. Side elevations contain five elongated arched stained-glass windows with slim concrete sills on each side. Between the second and third arched windows on each side are small flat roof extensions housing confessional booths. All rainwater goods are metal.
The church is situated on the roadside within a housing settlement with extensive tarmacadam surrounding the building and defining its curtilage. There is no curtilage enclosure to the rear. The building first appears on the fourth edition Ordnance Survey map of 1956–7, captioned as 'Dorsy RC Church', as part of a new settlement that has since grown into a small village centred on the church. The site lies close to the former location of Bleeke's Inn, where Oliver Plunkett gathered in conference with his clergy during the period of Catholic worship suppression under the Penal Laws.
