Description

7 Hilltown Road, Bryansford

A picturesque one and a half storey house with large gabled dormers to the front and overhanging eaves, set on the north side of Hilltown Road just west of Bryansford village. The building was constructed around 1850 as a constabulary barrack, though it may incorporate fabric from an earlier structure shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The property was recorded in Slater's Directory of 1856 as being under the supervision of Constable McNeilly, and in Bassett's County Down Guide of 1886 under Sergeant J. Murphy. It appears to have been converted to domestic use in the early 1900s, with no police station recorded in directories after 1900.

The front façade faces roughly south and is finished in roughcast. To the right stands a single storey gabled porch with a timber sheeted door to the west and windows to the south and east. The porch roof features an overhang with decorative barges. To the left of the porch are two windows, and above are three large gabled dormers, each containing a small window and displaying similar overhangs and barges to the porch. The west gable is blank, while the east gable has a central window. All windows throughout have PVC frames. The main roof is laid with natural slates to the front. Two tall chimney stacks sit in front of the ridge line.

The building was substantially reconstructed in 1984–85, with the main roof, dormers and porch rebuilt. At this time a very large gabled extension was added to the rear, featuring modern windows to the north and east faces and a glazed door to the west. The rear façade of the main house has a large modern window. The rear roof and extension use artificial slates. Metal and PVC rainwater goods are present throughout.
