Description
11 Hilltown Road is a much altered one and a half storey house situated on the north side of Hilltown Road, to the south-west of Bryansford village in County Down. It survives as a record only.
The building was originally constructed as a small Gothic set piece lodge, probably dating from the late 1770s to early 1780s. It was likely built as a steward's lodge for the neighbouring Tollymore estate by the 2nd Lord Limerick. The present owners, quoting information supplied by Lady Roden, believe it was originally intended as one of a pair, although its twin was never built. Before modernisation, the house featured distinctive crow-stepped gables with 'bap' stones, small pointed arch sash windows, and a pointed arch doorway.
The building has been substantially altered, particularly around 1973 when a previous owner removed the crow-steps, enlarged the windows, and added a large modern extension to the rear. In its current state, the property has only its pointed arch doorway as a visible reminder of its age and original Gothic appearance.
The front, or south-facing, façade is symmetrical. At its centre stands a pointed arch doorway with a granite surround, within which is set a recessed modern glazed door. To either side of this doorway is a large window with a modern frame. The west gable has a modern window to the upper level, while the east gable is blank. To the rear is a large modern two-storey flat-roofed extension which merges with a modern flat-roofed dormer, both featuring modern openings. The façade is finished in salt and pepper pebbledash render. The main gabled roof has a slight overhang and is covered in natural slate, with PVC rainwater goods.
The property is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 onwards and retained its original Gothic appearance until its significant modernisation circa 1973.
