Description
This is a small, attractive house, a rare and largely unaltered example of early Council housing. Built in the years following 1900, it is situated on the north side of Ardkeeragh Road, Donaghmore, Newry. The house is notable for its survival without significant modernisation, contributing to its special interest.
The house is a single-storey, three-bay design, with its principal, southwest-facing elevation overlooking the road. It has a shallow, hipped roof, aligned east-west, with overhanging eaves showing exposed rafter tails. Red brick chimneys are positioned at each end of the roof ridge. Half-round metal rainwater goods are fitted. The walls are rendered, with a red brick base course of five courses, matching stepped quoins, and similar window dressings. A brick jack arch sits above each window and door opening. All windows are 6/6 sliding sash windows with horns and granite sills.
The central bay features a door to the left and a window to the right. Two concrete steps lead to the timber-panelled front door, which has a 3x3 pane glazed section above. The left and right bays each contain a single window. The left gable is blank.
The rear elevation has a window in the central and right bays. The left bay is almost entirely obscured by a derelict flat-roofed extension with painted and rendered walls. A metal-framed casement window and a timber-panelled door are visible on the extension's rear face. The right gable features a central window. A concrete plinth at the south corner formerly served as a stand for a rainwater barrel (now absent).
The house first appears in the Valuation revision book of 1915 and was built by Newry Rural District Council. A similar, but altered, house can be found at 23 Sheepbridge Road, Belfast Road, overlooking the Sheeptown Inn.
