Description
This is one of a small group of urban vernacular dwellings, likely dating from the 18th century. It is a two-storey and attic, single-bay shop, the second of four in a terrace on the west side of Canal Street. The building has a steep natural slate roof with a broad rendered chimney on the left, shared with number 20. A cast iron skylight sits on the front roof slope, and semicircular metal rainwater goods drain into adjacent properties. The front wall is painted lined render with corbelled eaves.
The ground floor features a shop front. To the right is a vertically and horizontally tongue-and-groove sheeted door, topped with a narrow four-paned mouth organ glazed transom. To the left is a boarded-up shop window. A painted granite cill runs beneath the window, extending into the wall and stopping at the door. Narrow panelled timber pilasters are positioned to either side of the door and to the left of the window, supporting a plain timber fascia with a leaded drip mould to the head. The first floor has a 6x6 Yorkshire sliding sash window, with a painted two-piece granite cill. The gable of number 20 to the left and number 24 to the right form party walls with the adjacent properties. Access to the rear is not available.
The building appears on a map dated 1835 and was described in a 1838 valuation as a thatched building measuring 17 feet 6 inches by 24 feet 6 inches by 14 feet 6 inches. Similar dimensions were recorded in a 1863 valuation. It is considered the same building described in these valuations. The date when the thatch was replaced with slates is uncertain, but the roof framing was replaced with sawn timber while retaining the original roof pitch.
Historical records indicate the building was originally a thatched house. It is currently used as a residential property within a terrace. The building is owned by a charity.
