Description
This is a two-storey building of roughly coursed granite rubble, dating from around the mid-19th century (1860-1879). It is of interest due to its proximity to an adjoining warehouse. The building is situated in a yard opposite another structure. It has a gabled roof covered in corrugated asbestos sheeting, with matching asbestos rainwater goods. The walls are constructed of coursed granite rubble with roughly dressed granite quoins. Six equally spaced openings are present on each floor, aligned in a row. The window openings feature stepped brick jambs and granite cills. The windows are fixed, with two panes vertically divided, and have metal security grills to the front.
The ground floor openings, from left to right, comprise: a window, a window, a timber-panelled door set within a segmental brick relieving arch, an infill window, a pair of timber-panelled doors matching the third opening, and a window. The first floor has a similar arrangement of windows and doors, although the right-hand set of ground-floor doors is accompanied by a window above. A fire escape, previously a loading door, is accessed by concrete steps along the front facade; remains of a cantilevered wooden hoisting beam are visible above this door. Plain gables flank the building, with a one-storey cement-rendered shed attached to each end. Markings on the walls suggest a former two-storey gabled building once abutted the left gable. The rear elevation includes an infilled window to the left at ground floor level, and a central fan ventilator. Two window openings are present at first floor level, now infilled and with cills removed.
The building was first documented in the 1863 Valuation Book and was originally owned by Messrs Carvill, who operated a steam-powered sawmill at the rear (now demolished). This sawmill ceased operations around 1887. It was formerly used as a store and is currently used for the same purpose. The building is considered to have industrial archaeological interest and sits within a conservation area.
