Description

36 The Mall was a two-storey house with an attic, dating from approximately 1800 to 1819. It stood on The Mall in Newry and was demolished on 11th November 1997, and is now occupied by a rear extension to the First Trust Bank. The building was surveyed prior to demolition.

The house had a pitched roof covered in artificial tiles and a concrete brick chimney rising parallel to the front facade and to the left of the ridge. The left gable featured a modern timber bargeboard, and the wall facing the street was constructed from uncoursed granite rubble, partially dashed. The main entrance was situated on the extreme right of the ground floor, featuring a timber door with a narrow transom above. A centrally positioned eight-paned metal casement window on the ground floor had been bricked up from within. Above this were single windows on each floor, each centrally positioned and consisting of a pair of lattice cast iron casements set in timber frames. The window frames were designed to mirror the decorative pattern of the casements below, and were set within rectangular openings with painted granite cills. The right gable was a party wall shared with the adjacent building, while the left gable was pebbledashed. The rear elevation mirrored the front façade. A single-storey return wing with a mono-pitched roof adjoined the ground floor to the left. The rear wall included a small 3/3 sliding sash window on the ground floor right, and one to each floor above. A smaller 2/2 sliding sash window was located on the first floor to the left. A window and door were incorporated into the right cheek of the return, with its roof enclosing an outhouse and outside toilet. The property was shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and lay within a conservation area.
